The Guide To Appropriate Event Attire

I know you’re wondering about it, because I am too! For most events that attend, I usually wear a nice dress paired up with 4″ high heels. You can never go wrong with high heels! I do admit that sometimes, or most of the time, I don’t know what is appropriate to wear to big events. When I have an idea of what I will wear, I end up second guessing my decision – there goes an hour of trying on dresses at Bloomingdales. After attending formals in college to some weddings post-grad and every other event in between, I’ve come up with some guidelines on what women can wear to various events they may attend:

This is the most formal of all event dress code. Try to think galas and the Oscars. This is the time to go all out! Ladies should wear: a formal, full-length ball gown in a neutral color such as dark brown or black. Glamorous makeup and more extravagant jewelry and hair are appropriate.

This is the next most formal event dress code and usually implies that the event is an evening affair. Ladies should wear: a chic cocktail dress or a long evening gown in a dark, neutral color like brown or black. Make sure the length of your dress appropriately matches the occasion of the event.

This suggests something slightly less formal than black tie. In other words, a tuxedo isn’t required, but the event is still formal enough  for one to be appropriate. Ladies should wear: a long dress, a dressy suit, or a formal cocktail-length dress in a dark neutral tone such as brown, gray, or black.

This suggests an elegant beach event. So dress to impress, but also dress for the elements such as the sun, sand, and water. Anything you’d wear to a nice restaurant on a summer day is appropriate. Ladies should wear: a formal summer dress or knee-length with flat sandals. Makeup and hair can be natural and everyday.

There is a little wiggle room for this one. Depending on the time of the event, you will want to dress somewhere between formal and casual. Wear darker, more formal hues for an evening event, and opt for light colors and fabrics for a daytime event. Ladies should wear: a cocktail dress or a dressy skirt and top.

Usually, casual means that anything works… for the most part. With that said, jeans, shorts, and tank tops are probably not appropriate unless they are specifically noted as acceptable. For the purposes of event wear, assume business casual just to be on the safe side. Ladies should wear: a summer sundress or a skirt or pants with a nice blouse. Makeup and hair can be natural and everyday.

No matter what event you will attend, you’ll look stunning!
