The Clarifying Perks of Using a Charcoal Mask

Living in New York City, my skin is constantly in contact with pollutants and it takes a toll on my skin after a while. This summer especially, my skin has been breaking out from the extra oils and buildup on my skin so I decided to look for a solid mask option to use 1-2 times a week to keep my face under control. In terms of purifying your skin, I have found that masks with active charcoal have provided the best results in clearing my skin on these sunny days!

When using a charcoal mask, apply a generous amount onto your skin or to the designated spots. The carbon in these products needs to interact with your skin’s impurities in order to remove the toxins so the longer the mask is on the better. Of course if you wear it for days that would be overdoing it though…

Since this time of year your skin tends to have a lot of excessive oils and toxins, it is the perfect season for a charcoal mask! Below are the top 3 charcoal masks I personally have tried and recommend:

Beautycounter’s Purifying Charcoal Mask

Beautycounter’s Purifying Charcoal Mask is a great option for those who are especially nervous about putting product onto their faces. I personally always get nervous when using masks as my face tends to react easily to products its not used to. However, a BC consultant, Melissa Knieriem offered to send me a sample before purchasing and I love it! She informed me that BC’s main mission is “to put safe products in the hands of everyone” by creating clean, organic products. This charcoal mask applies thin and evenly while also not cracking while it dries. I recommend this product not only because it’s free of any kind of parabens but also because it cleaned my face without over drying it as a side effect!

Origins’ Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask

I have been using Origins’ Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask for about a year now and have no complaints! I like the consistency of this mask and is gentle enough on my skin while still cleaning its impurities. I recommend purchasing the smaller size to try it out and then upgrade to the full size if you find it works for you! I have even slept with this product on my face and have woken up with very smooth, soft skin. I wouldn’t recommend that too often but once in a while when you need a jumpstart on your skin its great.

Dr. Jart’s Pore Minimalist Charcoal Sheet Mask

If you’re traveling a bit or need something a little more on-the-go, try the Dr. Jart’s Pore Minimalist Charcoal Sheet Mask. Each mask is infused with Korean charcoal, spearmint extract, and arginine and thoroughly detoxifies the pores and is also great on oily skin. The instructions say to leave the msk on for 20 minutes but I recommend leaving it on for 30-40 minutes to allow it to fully work.

Grab a bottle of wine on your way home, relax, and enjoy trying out one of these charcoal masks!
