THE WEEKLY LO-DOWN: IT’S OKAY TO HAVE FUN!
Over the weekend I took a last minute trip to Miami with a few girlfriends that I haven’t seen in a while. Normally I would get SO excited about a weekend getaway to catch up with friends but this time around I felt horribly guilty about going.
Even though I haven’t taken a vacation in over a year I felt like people would think I was lazy and unfocused by going. I thought I was the only one who would feel like this until my best friend showed up and was having major anxiety about spending the weekend relaxing as well. It made me realize that we are so obsessed with working and keeping up with our demanding jobs that it has become perhaps our main focus in life- NOT GOOD!
Work is so important but at the end of the day work is work. My work is my life and my dream but I learned this weekend that it’s okay to take a weekend away from it. It doesn’t mean you love it any less or aren’t working your butt off. If your always pushing back plans or missing out on trips because of work then eventually you’re going to have to spend more time mending that relationship that you are ruining by not ever finding an hour to catch up with him or her. When you’re working work, when you make a decision to do something else for a period of time, do that! I find when I allow myself a day or two to decompress, then I come back to my daily life more refreshed and motived to work then I did before.
It also doesn’t mean that you can’t find time to do some work without it taking away from your weekend. Whether it’s casually doing emails while you’re laying around watching tv or getting up a hour or two before everyone else to do work, you can find ways to be productive without taking about from the group’s time with each other.
We made a group decision to not talk about work, squeeze it in when we could, but to ultimately live in the moment. Once I realized it is okay to relax and have fun, I was able to truly live in the present and was ironically very excited to come into the office today.
I hope you all have a great, productive Monday and hope you were able to have your fun this weekend as well!
